Your privacy matters to us. Family Kharcha ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and your rights over it. By using our app or website, you agree to this policy.

1. Who We Are

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information when you use Family Kharcha:

2.1 Information You Provide

  • Account information: name, email address, phone number, and password (or social login credentials via Google, Facebook, or Apple).
  • Profile details: profile photo, date of birth, gender, and relationship labels you choose to add.
  • Launch notification signups: name and email address if you ask to be notified when Family Kharcha launches.
  • Family data: family group names, member details you add, roles (admin/member), and invitation information.
  • Financial data: budget amounts, expense entries, income entries, allocations, fund requests, categories, and descriptions you manually enter. We do not connect to your bank accounts or access real banking credentials.
  • Voice recordings: when you use the voice expense feature, your audio is recorded and sent to our AI provider (OpenAI) for transcription and expense parsing. Transcripts are stored in our database to improve accuracy.
  • Receipt photos: images you attach to expense entries are uploaded and stored securely in cloud storage.

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

  • Device information: device type, operating system version, device ID, and app version.
  • Push notification tokens: Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) tokens linked to your account to deliver push notifications to your device.
  • Crash reports: error logs including your user ID and anonymised context (e.g. app environment) to help us identify and fix bugs. These are processed by Firebase Crashlytics.

2.3 Information from Third Parties

  • Google Sign-In: if you log in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google's authentication service.
  • Facebook Login: if you log in with Facebook, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Facebook.
  • Apple Sign-In: if you log in with Apple, we receive your name and email address (or Apple's anonymised relay address) from Apple's authentication service.
  • Website signups: if you sign up for launch notifications on our website, we also collect your browser user agent and referrer URL to understand how people discover Family Kharcha.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your account and family groups.
  • Deliver the core features of the app: expense tracking, budget allocation, income tracking, and reports.
  • Process voice recordings through our AI provider (OpenAI) to automatically parse expense entries from speech.
  • Send push notifications about budget updates, new expenses, and member activity (you can disable these in settings).
  • Send invitation emails to family members you invite via our email provider (Brevo).
  • Respond to your support requests and communicate with you about your account.
  • Send launch updates if you joined the "Notify me" list.
  • Improve, debug, and develop new features for the app.
  • Comply with our legal obligations.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes.

4. How We Share Information

We share your information only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Within your family group: information you add to a family group (member names, allocated amounts, expense entries) is visible to all members of that group.
  • Service providers: we use trusted third-party services to operate the app, including:
    • Firebase (Google): push notifications and crash reporting (Crashlytics).
    • Neon (PostgreSQL): secure cloud database storage for all app data.
    • Vercel Blob: cloud storage for profile photos and receipt images.
    • Vercel: backend hosting and infrastructure.
    • OpenAI: AI-powered transcription and parsing of voice expense entries. Audio and text are sent to OpenAI's API and subject to OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
    • Brevo: transactional email delivery (e.g. family invitations). Recipient email addresses are shared with Brevo solely to send these emails.
  • Legal requirements: we may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government authority.
  • Business transfers: if Family Kharcha is acquired or merged with another entity, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before such a transfer occurs.

5. Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with our services. When you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or regulatory purposes.

Expense and budget data within family groups is retained as long as the family group exists. If you leave a family group, your member profile is removed but historical expense entries you created may remain as anonymised records.

6. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including:

  • TLS/HTTPS encryption for all data in transit.
  • Encrypted storage for sensitive credentials (e.g., JWT tokens stored in secure storage on your device).
  • Access controls limiting who can access production data.
  • Regular security reviews of our codebase and infrastructure.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access: request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction: request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete data.

  • Portability: request your data in a machine-readable format.
  • Objection: object to certain processing of your data.
  • Notification opt-out: disable push notifications at any time from your device settings or the app's notification settings.

8. Children's Privacy

Family Kharcha is intended for users aged 13 years and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with their information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

Our app may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any personal information.

10. Push Notifications

Family Kharcha uses Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to deliver push notifications. These notifications are used solely for in-app events (e.g., new allocation, new expense by a family member). You can opt out of push notifications at any time through your device's notification settings or within the app.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. When we make significant changes, we will notify you via the app or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
